The Don Gaspar Inn is perfectly situated for daily excursions to the six New Mexico State Monuments that commemorate the history and pre-history of our culture. In a three day special event, June 18 - June 21, motorcycle enthusiasts can join a communal ride to one of the newest opened sites, the Bosque Redondo Memorial, to commemorate the “Long Walk.” The run will revisit the miles walked by the Navajo people who were rounded up by the U.S. Army and forced to walk hundreds of miles to the Bosque Redondo Reservation at Fort Sumner in 1863. The commemorative ride began six years ago when a small group of Navajo wanted to pay homage to their ancestors. The event includes cookouts, traditional singing, a key-note speaker from the Navajo Nation, participants’ testimonials about their feelings and thoughts about the historic event, and spiritual observances. Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner is a New Mexico State Monument under the Department of Cultural Affairs.
