If visiting The Don Gaspar Inn March 8th through March 14th, you will have an opportunity to experience an ancient art form and theater performance at The Museum of International Folk Art. Dancing Shadows, Epic Tales: Wayang Kulit of Indonesia pays tribute to Indonesia's shadow puppet performance, which is among the world's oldest and greatest storytelling traditions. Wayang kulit (shadow puppets) are flat, leather puppets elaborately decorated and perforated which cast intricate and dramatic shadows when performed. Performances are usually based on classical literature with contemporary issues incorporated into particular scenes.
This performance also explores various aspects of the art form, including gamelan music, artistic shadow puppet making techniques, the performance of the dhalang (puppeteer), regional variations, and the cultural context of wayang kulit. Attendees can engage in hands-on activities including puppet-making, musical instruments, computer interactives, and more.
The Mueseum of National Folk Art is located on Museum Hill. For more information call (505) 476-1200 or visit www.internationalfolkart.org.
