A Walk Down Canyon Road
Just a few blocks from the Don Gaspar Inn; Canyon Road is an unexpected experience. One turns a corner to a world of discovery. On the corner of Paseo de Peralta and Canyon Road two stone faces rest on the grass steps. One by one, distinct galleries align both sides of the street. Color and signage play an important role in distinguishing one from the next. And then, of course, are the works of art. Sculpture in metal. Wood. Canvases layered with texture. A few blocks up, turning onto Garcia Street is The Downtown Subscription Coffee House, with its vast array of magazines, newspapers and coffee. Next door, Garcia Books displays a sidewalk selection intended for a browse. The outdoor patio is a good place to rest before returning to Canyon Road. You can walk for a mile up the hill enjoying traditional Pueblo architecture that has often been standing for over 100 years. Venturing inside galleries that feel personally inviting will take you into ever expanding Art Worlds. A look to your right might reveal a small gift shop or a door frame with a plaque that reads “please come in.” Well, since you said “please”. With a few small steps you are quietly in a sculpture garden, at first surprised by the gardens as you enter, not sure if it would be ok to disrupt the sculpture! There is a sense of living even in their stillness.
You might get thirsty, so you stop inside Curios for a bottle of water and a bunch of pleasant surprises, great handmade jewelry, a lemon tart on the counter, a rack of greeting cards you have to read. Every single one. But there is not enough time in the day to give everything the attention it deserves. Maybe you’ll return on Sunday evening. At 7 PM El Farol features live music.
